The Chocolate War was the first book I read about the cruelty in school life. I was shocked. It was 1994 when I got this book. In Taiwan, we seldom read books talking about the evil or violent sides of students. People always say that kids or students are like white papers. They are all innocent. But actually, in the process of growing up, kids find out many differert sides of human nature, but they don't talk with their parents about the frustration or bullies they have to face at school.
Now it is 2011, 17 years after I read the novel. Cruelty still exists because it's part of human nature, isn't it? How do kids cope with the real evil aspests existing in their life? Do they have to stand still and fight like Jerry in the novel? Or they have to hide themslves or fade into the background? There is no definite answer, isn't it?

Last year, I began to notice the books written by Laurie Halse Anderson. Wondering in Eslite on the third floor, I first saw the book
Wintergirls, then,
Chains,
Twisted,
Catalyst, and finally
Speak. I picked
Twisted as the first to talk about.

I bought this book 12 years ago, I was collecting books about witches. 12 years later, I reread the book. It was still fun. In this book, I found the song "Old McDonald Had A Farm" in the book. It is a book very suitable for readers reading aloud because the rhythm there is musical and dramatic.
Compared to other witches, Gritch the witch in this book is not that witty. She wants to make a piggy pie for a change but she needs eight piggies. She found a farm but she can't find any piggies. Where are the piggies anyway? They are under disguise. It is fun to read and find the clues hidden with humor.
Finally, Gritch the witch may not be able to make the piggy pie, but a skinny wolf who has just puffed the houses of three little pigs comes to give her an advice. It is the advice that Gritch finds her lunch! Enjoy the final pun "I always enjoy having a wolf for lunch."
